Gucci

Currently the apple of every fashion editor’s eye, Gucci is an Italian house with an extraordinary knack for making things you’ll really, really want. Watch out for the bags you’ll desire with an ardour you never thought you could muster.

Debuted by the fantastically-named Guccio Gucci in 1921, this label began life as a small luggage store in leather capital of the world, Florence. While working in London’s very own Savoy Hotel, Gucci immersed himself in the clean, luxury aesthetic of English finery. Much of his original designs – such as equestrian-inspired bags, trunks and leather accessories – draw on this immersion.

The Hollywood-obsessed nineteen-fifties adored these luxurious pieces, and boutiques opened all over the world. Jackie Kennedy-Onassis and Grace Kelly are just two women who adored the brand: the former famously carried a shoulder bag that would come to be named after her, while Kelly saw a Gucci scarf created just for her.

By 1994, this Italian brand was one of the world’s most famous fashion houses, and drafting in the controversial Tom Ford as Creative Director only served to raise its already sky-high profile. A mainstay for watches, shoes and fragrance, Gucci has since become a power-player in clothing too.

With Alessandro Michele’s new fairytale-like aesthetic for the almost-centenarian brand, a new day has dawned for the company. Gucci is currently one of the fashion world’s most sought-after labels, as Michele creates season after season of beautiful, otherworldly clothes and accessories.
